Riga is one of my favourite places in the Baltic states.
Latvia’s capital tastes like Scandinavian hip culture, boasts a significant Russian influence, many Latvians are of Russian origin and speak the language, and it is still like other places in Eastern Europe very affordable.
Some connections recommended Muusu, at first sight just one sophisticated venue where affluent locals go, as they do.
In fact Muusu’s terrace is quite charming, and a great option for the summer, the menu is in many ways a celebration of Nordic fine-dining, not in price though since we are talking about 13€, beverages excluded.
My bread obsession is certainly pleased here, I was offered dark Latvian bread, bread with shredded onion or kurkuma.
An Italian would never refuse olive oil on bread, make sure you do not spoil it with balsamic vinegar. Just a tip.My lunch starts with whipped goat cheese, with raspberry gel, nut basil purée, chocolate biscuits and spinach powder.
I found the chololate pairing a touch of genius.Cream of wild mushroom soup, spinach and Brie is probably not the most appropriate for a summer meal but mushrooms were very tasty indeed, and a fat cheese like Brie is a good choice to melt in a soup.Garlic oil-fried pork belly, onion and potato gratin, port-wine sauce.
Summer lunch? Again yes, pork belly was perfectly crispy outside like juicy inside, I should expect potatoes to be excellent, and that gratin really was.Cottage cheese cranberry cream, pears in red wine, berry sauce.
This was the only disappointing part of my meal right where I usually draw my conclusions. I had exprcted a cottage cheese rather different from a whipped cream-like dessert, in a oyherwise excellent meal.
Good wine list.
